With the use of materials such as ceramics and carbon fibre becoming more wide spread across an incresaing range of industries, many manufacturers are viewing centreless grinding as a more cost effective process than cylindrical grinding due to the flexibility and efficiency it offers. Centreless grinding is also becoming more predominant in the medical industry, where highly accurate components can be manufactured cost effectively in large volumes.

CERAMIC COMPONENTS | The use of ceramics such as alumina and zirconia is becoming far more widespread in almost all industries, as manufacturing techniques are advanced to allow effective manufacture on these types of material.

Artifical joints and ceramic bearings and shafts for underwater and outdoor applications are amongst two of the fastest growing ceramic markets, with centreless grinding being appropriate for use in both sectors. Through correct abrasive selection a variety of profiles, both sharp and round, can be ground into ceramic components efficiently in high volumes.

MEDICAL COMPONENTS | Centreless grinding is well suited to the manufacture of components for the medical industry, due to the variety of media that can be machined, tight tolerances that can be held and high production volumes the process offers.

Products such as very narrow catheter rods can be ground on throughfeed applications, whereas syringe needles and plungers are more extensively ground on a plunge setup. Both techniques are suitable for load and unload automation, and through integrationg of laser gauging systems exceptional accuracy can be maintained, even without operator intervention.

ELECTRIC MOTOR COMPONENTS | With the power generation and automotive industry driving demand for increasingly efficient electric motors, more manufacturers are turning to centreless grinding to satisfy quality requirements while utilising cost effective manufacturing techniques.

Because many components for use in electric motors can be ground on one machine, universally configurable between plunge and throughfeed operations, production and maintenance costs can be dramatically reduced, while at the same time increasing capacity, by adopting the centreless approach.
